Metal Roofing Types

We’re proud to provide durable, long-lasting solutions for industrial and commercial roofing systems across the Florida area. When it comes time for a roof replacement, we’ll help you find the right material and specialized treatment options for your building.

There are several metal roof materials available, but the two main types are standing seam metal roofs and screw-down panel metal roofs. Here’s a look at each:

  • Standing seam metal roofing conceals all the fasteners. It features panels that are attached to the roof deck (the plywood or other wood beneath the outermost roofing materials) with clamps. That means the fasteners (the clamps) aren’t exposed to the elements – and that these roofs don’t have any nail holes that could allow moisture to get in.
  • Screw-down metal roofing is held together with screws. These types of roofs need a lot of screws to hold them in place, and unless they’re properly installed, they can allow moisture to seep into the roofing materials below the metal panels.

Common Metal Roof Materials

  • Aluminum is one of the most durable, long-lasting metal roofing materials, which makes it a great choice for many buildings. It can also help maintain cooler temperatures inside a building because of its reflectivity, which bounces back heat from the sun. Many people report seeing utility costs go down after installing an aluminum roof. These roofs are also fire-resistant, and they can stand up to difficult weather conditions.
  • Copper is one of the most aesthetically pleasing metal roofing materials. Generally, they last a long time, too – a well-maintained copper roof can last for 60 or more years. Like other types of metal roofing, they’re fire-resistant and strong. One thing to note: Copper oxidizes and turns green after several years if it’s not coated. For some people, this is a great choice – and for others, a clear coat of lacquer or polyurethane can prevent oxidation.
  • Corrugated metal. Corrugated metal sheets are strong and long-lasting, and they’re rugged enough to stand up to the elements. Corrugated metal roofs are often the most affordable and economical option; they cost about the same as asphalt shingles do. Corrugated metal roofs are typically made from steel, aluminum or copper. These thin, lightweight panels can be installed over an existing roof.
  • Metal tile. Metal tile roofs are actually made from metal and covered in a thin layer of natural stone. This roofing – commonly called stone-coated metal roofing – is much lighter than stone tiles are, and often, these materials are more cost-effective than stone tile, as well.
  • Steel roofs are crack-resistant, shrink-resistant and erosion-resistant. Steel is so durable that you see it in kitchens, toolboxes and even automobiles – and it makes a great roofing material, as well. The typical lifespan of a steel roof is up to 30 years with proper maintenance, and perhaps the most attractive things about these types of roofs is that they’re energy efficient and recyclable. And like other metal roofs, steel is fire-resistant, which can help protect your building’s structure.
  • Tin roofs aren’t made entirely of tin. They’re actually made from steel inside and feature a tin coating on the outermost layer. The tin coating is chemically bonded to the steel, which helps prevent cracking and improves strength. Most tin roofs last up to 40 years, but many people choose it because it’s also usually made from up to 60 percent recycled materials.
  • Zinc is often the material used for custom roofs. That’s because it’s an easy to work with material that roofers can use to create unique looks. Zinc is very durable, and it’s crack- and erosion-resistant as it toughs its way through difficult weather conditions. Zinc is completely recyclable, and it can last for up to 100 years if properly maintained and cared for.

Is Metal Roofing Superior to Asphalt Roofing?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to whether metal roofing is superior to asphalt roofing, but for many people, it’s the right choice. Check out the following sections to learn more so you can make the right decision.

Life Expectancy of Metal Roofing Materials

Metal roofing typically lasts a lot longer than asphalt shingles do. In fact, most metal roofs can last for up to 80 years (with some being on the low end of the spectrum with 40-year lifespans). On average, a metal roof lasts two to three times longer than asphalt shingles do.

Metal Roof Cleaning and Maintenance

Most metal roofing materials are typically easy to clean – you’ll just use simple soap and water. (Just don’t use abrasive tools, which can scratch your roof’s surface.) These metal roofing materials typically come out of the factory having been coated with zinc or a mixture of zinc and aluminum to protect them.

Cost-Effectiveness of Metal Roofs

Metal roofs may increase your building’s resale value, and it may help you lower your insurance rates. That’s because metal is fire-resistant. Most metal roofs come with extensive warranties, as well, and they can handle difficult weather events like hail, heavy snow and high winds. When your roof is tough enough to stand up to the elements, you won’t have to pay to have it repaired or replaced.

Benefits of Sheet Metal Roofing

Sheet metal roofing has several benefits, and we often recommend it for commercial buildings where it’s a good fit. Although metal roofing isn’t the right choice for every commercial building, check out some of the benefits it offers to find out whether it may be right for you:
